NHL playoffs action opens with what could be the best series in the first round of post season NHL betting between St. Louis and Vancouver. NHL playoffs handicappers will have their choice of two of the hottest teams at the end of the regular season that has considerable NHL betting momentum.

The St. Louis Blues enter the NHL playoffs as one of the best values in NHL betting.  St. Louis began the New Year as one of the worst teams in the league and seemingly without hope of reaching the NHL playoffs as they stood at the very bottom of the western conference standings.

Much of those early season problems for the Blues stemmed from numerous key injuries.  But once their better players healed and returned to action the Blues began one of the most impressive drives towards the NHL playoffs that has been seen in recent memory as they got the cash in 9 of their final 11 games.

St. Louis was able to make the NHL playoffs the old fashioned way in that they are a hard working team that scraps and fights and never gives up.  That being said they lack scoring depth and skill as they ranked just 19th overall in the NHL for offense.

Their defense was the key element in their success as it ranked 12th best. Goaltender Chris Mason finished with a 2.41 goals against average and 27 wins.

Speaking of goaltenders, the Vancouver Canucks have one of the best and most valuable in Roberto Luongo, who is the catalyst of their success.  Luongo won 33 games and had a 2.35 goals against average for the season.  Like the Blues the Canucks enter the NHL playoffs as an ATM machine with 23 payoffs in their last 31 games of the regular season.

Twin brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin both finished with an identical, (go figure), total of 82 points to lead the team and will be key elements in the NHL playoffs.  Vancouver ranked 11th overall in the NHL for offense and is one of the better defensive teams in the NHL playoffs with a ranking of 7th in the league.
