UFC 101 will feature the Lightweight Championship bout between two American Mixed Martial Arts stars as champion BJ Penn will take on challenger Kenny Florian. UFC 101 takes place on August 8 from Philadelphia, PA as the Mixed Martial Arts world will focus on an outstanding top of the card title bout.
BJ “The Prodigy” Penn enters UFC 101 as the Lightweight Champion of Mixed Martial Arts and has been a former UFC Welterweight Champion. He comes into UFC 101 with the distinction of being only the second fighter ever to win titles in two different weight classifications.
Penn has one of the most interesting and diverse backgrounds of any UFC 101 fighter as in 2000 he became the first American born winner of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. He enters UFC 101 having been involved in ultimate fighting since 2001. He at one time left UFC stating a lack of challenging fights but returned in 2006.
It is interesting to note that Penn actually lost his last bout prior to UFC 101 but in the 170 pound Welterweight class as he was defeated by Canada’s Georges St. Pierre by TKO as the doctor stopped the fight at the 5:00 mark of round 4. Penn has never lost as a Lightweight. Penn has 19 career matches and a record of 13 wins and 5 losses. He has 5 wins and 2 losses by knockout, 5 wins and 0 losses by submission, and 3 wins and 3 losses by decision.
Florian hails from Massachusetts although his parents are Peruvian. He enters UFC 101 having been an ultimate fighter since 2006. His last bout prior to UFC 101 made him the top ranked Lightweight contender as he defeated Joe Stevenson by submission at the 4:03 mark of the 1st round. It was Florian’s sixth consecutive win. In 14 career matches Florian has a record of 11 wins and 3 losses. He has won 3 and lost 1 by knockout, won 7 and lost 0 by submission, and won 1 and lost 2 by decision.
