Play now!More than 200 people were picked to compete in the Federated Sports and Gaming professional poker league.
Annie Duke is the commissioner of the league and she announced that the league has picked 218 players who have been invited to compete.
The players picked for the league were said to have been chose based on their results in high stakes poker tournaments played live, their number of cashes, big wins and the money they have won in the past few years. What the actual criteria used to pick the players is known only by the Federated Sports and Gaming league but their announcement stated that some of the factors used to pick the players. The 218 players picked for the league will get tournament cards that are good for either two, three or five years.
Pros Only League
The professional poker league is an attempt to have something similar to what GSN does with their High Stakes Poker where only the best players can play. The league is trying to make it so the best players in the world go up against each other. Whether it will work or not is another story as many top players don’t have a great desire to be risking their money against other top players when they can use it elsewhere.
There are some top players in the league including Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu and Erik Seidel. There are some big names that didn’t make the cut though like World Series of Poker winners Jamie Gold and Jonathan Duhamel because their tournament wins were capped at $2 million dollars. The league is trying to keep away from having a player in the league who makes one huge score and then is never in the money again.
The league is planning to start play this year even though the online poker world was rocked by the indictments handed down to three offshore companies that are keeping U.S. players out of their sites. The Federated Sports and Gaming league said that the recent news regarding the three online poker sites has not changed their plans at all. Whether the league can actually get anyone to play in their events without offering numerous freerolls is in debate but time will tell.
