Play now!Ivan Freitez beat 685 other players to win the EPT Grand Final in Madrid this past week.
Much of the attention at the final table was on Alex Gomes as he attempted to become just the third player ever to win an event on the European Poker Tour, World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker. Freitez stole the spotlight though and took home the €1,500,000 top prize.
The only two players in poker history to complete the so-called Triple Crown are Gavin Griffin and Roland de Wolfe. Gomes could have become the third but he just couldn’t get it going at the final table.
Freitez Dominates Final Table
When final table play began it was Freitez who had the chip lead and he used it well as he pushed around the competition. He eliminated four of the seven opponents in the process of claiming the title. Eugene Yanayt started final table play by knocking out two players but then he doubled up Torsten Brinkmann before eliminating Gomes. Yanayt’s up and down ride continued when he doubled up Andrey Danilyuk before Freitez eliminated him in sixth place. When play got down to the final four it was Freitez who dominated as he eliminated Andrey Danilyuk in fourth place. Freitez had so many of the chips when it was four-handed that the other three players were really playing for second. Tamas Lendvei went out in third place so when the heads-up battle started it was Freitez who had more than a 4-1 chip lead over Torsten Brinkmann. There was one double-up for Brinkmann but his rally didn’t last long as his A-K was outdrawn by the 9-10 of Freitez and the match was over. Freitez becomes the first player from Venezuela to win an EPT tournament.
The final event of the EPT season will be a Champion of Champions tournament where all of the previous EPT winners go up against each other for entries into next year’s events.
