Play now!The 42nd annual World Series of Poker is set to begin at the end of this month at the Rio in Las Vegas.
This year the World Series of Poker will have 58 events including the $50,000 Poker Players Championship, a $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Championship and of course, the $10,000 Main Event.
May 30th through July 19th
The World Series of Poker opens up on Memorial Day although the first official event is not until Tuesday, May 31st. That first day will have a lot of excitement because it will be the start of the $25,000 Heads-Up event. The final tournament of the WSOP will be the Main Event which begins on Thursday, July 7th and runs through Tuesday July 30th when the final table will be set. The final table of 9 will then come back in November and play from November 5th through the 7th to determine a champion.
Nearly Live Streaming
The World Series of Poker has announced that they will show the final table of all 58 bracelet events on a five-minute delay. While that might sound great it is really not going to be very exciting. There will be no hole card cams and no commentary. It will be like you are at the event and watching the table in the crowd. And if you have ever been at a big event you know that that it is pretty boring for the most part. The hole card cameras are what made televised poker what it is today so the nearly-live streaming of the events doesn’t have much appeal.
Number of Entrants Will be Lower
There is no question that the number of people playing in the main event will be lower than the 7,319 that were in the tournament last year. With the problems that three of the major online poker sites are having there is little doubt that fewer players will be playing in the main event. Top poker player Tom Dwan recently said he expects the number of entrants in the main event to drop by about 2,000. WSOP officials haven’t said much although they are putting out a brave face hoping that the drop is not substantial. Last year there were a record 72,966 entrants in the many different tournaments. Despite what some WSOP officials have said about having just as many people at this year’s tournament that is simply not going to be the case.
