NHL Playoffs action is unlike anything else in all of sports as shocking surprises against the hockey odds are part of the norm in post season. NHL Playoffs fans have again seen the challenge of handicapping the "surprise element" against the hockey odds in the Ranger-Capital series.
The New York Rangers won the first two games of this NHL Playoffs series at Washington against the favored Capitals. The Rangers were figured to be too punchless on offense to have much of a chance against the hockey odds versus the Caps but New York held a solid defensive edge over Washington and that has been the difference so far in this NHL Playoffs series.
The Rangers had one of the worst offenses in the league this year as they ranked 28th in the NHL for scoring. But in game 1 of the NHL Playoffs against explosive Washington the Broadway Blueshirts prevailed 4-3 as Brandon Dubinsky got the game winning goal at the 11:43 mark of the third period.
Scott Gomez had a great debut in the NHL Playoffs for the Rangers with 1 goal and 2 assists while goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 32 out of 35 shots as the Caps threw everything they had at him.
Washington goaltender Jose Theodore was mentioned as a cause of concern for Washington as they entered the NHL Playoffs and he found himself on the bench for game 2 after allowing 4 goals on just 21 shots in the game 1 loss.
Simeon Varlamov was much better in goal for game 2 as he allowed just 1 goal on 24 shots but that was all the Rangers needed as Lundqvist turned aside all 35 Washington shots to get off to a phenomenal start in the
The big question is if Washington can regain their psyche and maintain their composure. New York has the Caps number as they have beaten Washington in 8 of their last 9 meetings and the host has won 23 of the last 32 decisions in this head to head series.
