NHL playoffs action turns to the Canucks and Blues in game three of their western conference playoff series on the NHL odds card. NHL playoffs fans have their choice of two solid defensive teams that were also cranking out the cash against the NHL odds down the stretch.
The Vancouver Canucks entered the NHL playoffs with considerable momentum as they beat the NHL odds 23 out of 32 times to enter the NHL playoffs as one of the hottest commodities on the board. The key to Vancouver's success then and now is goaltender Roberto Luongo.
When Luongo was out in the early to mid season with an injury the Canucks floundered and were well behind the Calgary Flames for first place in the northwest division. Upon Luongo's return, however, the Canucks became an entirely different team and made up considerable ground to overcome the Flames and end up as the division champions and with a 3-seed for the NHL playoffs.
Luongo finished with a sparkling record of 33-13 with a 2.34 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. There are two other key reasons for Vancouver's potential in the NHL playoffs and those would be twin brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin. Daniel, a left winger, had 31goals and 51 assists while center Henrik had 22 goals and 60 assists. The twins each totaled 82 points to lead the team. There is considerable dropoff from there, however, as the next best two players, center Ryan Kessler and right wing Pavol Demitra, finished with 59 and 53 points respectively.
The St. Louis Blues were given up for dead in January as they languished near the basement of the western conference and were given zero chance to make the NHL playoffs. But the Blues were one of the best teams down the stretch and their 9-2 finish to the regular season put them into the NHL playoffs as a 6-seed and re-ignited the passion of the city towards the team. This will be the first home playoff game in five years for the Blues and their fans will pack the Scott Trade Center to the rafters for this one, making for a nice intangible factor for NHL playoffs handicappers.
