Hockey odds have not been kind to the Rangers while the Panthers have been a solid bet on hockey value. The New York Rangers have one of the better records in the eastern conference but that has not been translated into success against the hockey odds.
The Broadway Blueshirts had an overall bet on hockey record of 29-19-2 straight up but were just 21-31 against the hockey odds. The problem that the Rangers have had against the hockey odds is that they are consistently prohibitive favorites which makes any loss that they incur incredibly costly.
The Rangers have another major problem that will prevent them from having any consistent success against the hockey odds, which is their 30th ranked offense. The Rangers have had to try and get by against the hockey odds with their 9th ranked defense.
Henrik Lundqvist has been stellar in goal with a 2.53 goals against average and a save percentage of .913. His caddy, Steve Valiquette has been nearly as good. As you might expect the Rangers have been a solid “under” play against the over/under hockey odds. New York went over the total in just 18 out of their first 53 games.
The Florida Panthers have been a far better value against the hockey odds this season as they have been a far greater surprise than the Rangers. Florida had an overall bet on hockey record of 25-19-2-6 straight up and was 28-24 against the hockey odds. Like the Rangers, the Panthers have a solid defense that ranked 8th.
Their offense is the difference against the hockey odds as it ranked 17th overall. While their offense is not explosive it’s not hopeless like New York’s. Florida has gone over the total in just 8 out of 24 home games. Florida beat the Rangers in their last meeting 4-0 on November 30 from Madison Square Garden, New York.
