Hockey odds have not treated Ottawa well lately while the Habs have been on something of a NHL wagering rebound as they try and salvage the post season. The Ottawa Senators have been one of the better values against the hockey odds this season despite having a poor straight up record.
Ottawa had a NHL wagering mark of 33-34-5-5 straight up but was 40-37 against the hockey odds. However as the season has wound down and with nothing of consequence to play for Ottawa has hit the skids recently. From March 25 through April 2 Ottawa was 1-4 against the hockey odds.
The Senators have been a weak offensive team this year and ranked only 22nd in the league. The defense was much better and ranked 13th overall. Goaltender Alex Auld has been an asset for the Sens against the hockey odds as he had a .910 save percentage.
The Ottawa offense is very top heavy as right winger Daniel Alfredsson led in scoring with 73 points. He was followed by center Jason Spezza with 69 and left wing Dany Heatley with 67. There is a precipitous drop from there, however, as the next highest scorer had only 39 points!
Ottawa has been ineffective against the hockey odds in road action with just 13 wins out of 39 games played. The Montreal Canadiens were one of the top teams in all of NHL wagering until hosting the all star game. From there they suffered an epic collapse against the hockey odds.
From January 20 through March 21 Montreal was just 9-19 against the hockey odds before recovering to win 4 out of the next 5 games that followed to slam on the breaks to what was becoming a crash that could have left them out of the post season.
A resurgent offense is what got Montreal back to beating the hockey odds along with the goaltending of Carey Price.
