Bet on the NFL In a battle of the NFC West, the 2nd ranked Seattle Seahawks hit the road to San Francisco to take on the 3rd ranked Seahawks. In recent 49ers news, with his injured shoulder recovered, Alex Smith, who started the 49ers' first seven games this season will replace Troy Smith as the team's starter Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
As for the latest with the Seahawks, they are concerned that the team's leading wide receiver Mike Williams will miss at least one game due to ankle and foot injuries, according to a team source on Monday. With the NFC West still wide open and four games left to play, the San Francisco 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks.
The San Francisco 49ers are still trying to overcome their horrible start to the season as it won't take much to win the West in the NFC this season. The 49ers have won four of their last six games but they are more than likely going to have to win out to make the post season. Troy Smith has completed 59.1 percent of his passes for 1,554 yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions but Mike Singletary has already announced that Alex Smith will be the starter this week. Frank Gore is gone for the season with a hip injury and Brian Westbrook is now the feature back and he's averaging 4.8 yards per carry thus far in his expanded role. Vernon Davis is still getting better by the game with 674 yards and five touchdowns and Michael Crabtree has 554 yards and five touchdowns. Patrick Willis is one of the premier defenders in the game with 101 tackles and five sacks and Takeo Spikes has 82 tackles. Justin Smith has five and a half sacks while Travis LaBoy, Parys Haralson, and Ahmad Brooks all have four. Shawntae Spencer has three interceptions and Nate Clements and Spikes have two each. For the season San Francisco is averaging 16.9 points and 316 yards while the defense is allowing 21.6 points and 324.6 yards.
The Seattle Seahawks haven't been consistent but at .500, they are very much in the mix and contending for a spot in the playoffs. Last week the Seahawks looked lost in the first half against Carolina but they rebounded in a big way and blew the Panthers out. With Mike Williams on the sidelines Matt Hasselbeck looked for other options but the who team rallied on both sides of the ball as the Seahawks kept their playoff hopes alive and well. For the season Hasselbeck has completed 59.3 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while being sacked 27 times. Marshawn Lynch has 35 yards and Justin Forsett has 469. Williams is Seattle's leading receiver with 654 yards and he's expected to be back for this one and Deon Butler has 31 catches and three touchdowns. David Hawthorne has 79 tackles while Lawyer Milloy has 69 and Earl Thomas has 64. Chris Clemons has eight and a half sacks and Raheem Brock has five as Seattle has 29 as a team. Thomas leads in interceptions with five, half of the Seahawks 10 total on the year. For the season Seattle is averaging 20 points and 305.3 yards while the defense is allowing 24.1 points and 389.3 yards per game.
Sportsbook lists the 49ers as the 4.5 point faves with the total over under at 41.
San Francisco is 9-3-3 against the NFL spread in their last 15 games following a game which they didn't cover, 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games overall, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six against NFC teams. Seattle is 5-1 against the spread in their last six against the NFC West, 3-12 against the spread in their last 15 road games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five as an underdog. The underdog has covered in four of the last five meetings of these two.
This should be a close one as the Niners offense struggles and the Seattle defense has lapses as well, so the stronger units face off as do the weaker ones. Looking at the number at more than a field goal, it's tough to look away from the points as the game is a coin toss so the points are the obvious play.
