Bet on the NFLThe New Orleans Saints make the short trip to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. The first kick of the ball is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET in Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC. The game can be seen regionally on FOX.
Both teams suffered defeats in the opening week of the season. The Saints lost their home opener to RG3 and the Washington Redskins, as they gave up 10 points in each quarter. The final score of 40-32 is deceptive, as the Saints were down 30-17 after the end of the third quarter, and committed 3 turnovers throughout the game. QB Drew Brees had a tough game, throwing 24-of-52 for 339 yards and 3 TDs, but also 2 interceptions. They suffered a 464-358 deficit in offensive yards, and a 153-52 deficit in rushing yards.
The Panthers lost their road opener to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 16-10. The Bucs shut out the Panthers for the first half and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. QB Cam Newton threw a decent game, going 23-of-33, for 303 yards and 1 touchdown, but also threw 2 interceptions. The Panthers set a franchise record with just 10 rushing yards, and suffered a 130-10 deficit in rushing yards to the Bucs.
The Saints failed to cover the spread in their opener, despite being the home favorite. The home team is 14-5 ATS lately in Saints games. At this point, New Orleans' offseason troubles may finally be catching up to them. The Panthers also failed to cover the spread last week as the road favorite.
These two teams have played 22 times since 2001. In January of 2012, the Saints were favored by 8 points, winning 45-17. In October 2011, the Saints were a 6 ½ point favorite, winning 30-27 but failing to cover. The Saints also won two games over the Panthers in 2010, and once in 2009, with Carolina winning one game in 2009.
The Saints are a small 2 ½ point favorite from the Bet Royal football odds to win on the road. The over/under is set at 51 points.
