Bet on NCAAFThe 101st meeting between North Carolina and Duke in football was held on Thursday night in Durham as North Carolina snapped their two-game losing streak to the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels won 45-20 to not only take the Victory Bell trophy in the local rivalry but to also become bowl eligible. Meanwhile, Duke's loss gave Georgia Tech the ACC Coastal division title.
It only took one quarter for the Tar Heels to make a run for it as they took a 21-7 lead. Marquise Williams had two touchdown passes while Tim Scott recovered a fumble for a touchdown after Duke quarterback Anthony Boone was sacked and lost the ball.
The Heels then took a 35-7 lead from a T.J. Logan run that came after M.J. Stewart intercepted a pass. Anthony Boone had a touchdown pass later in the quarter but by then the Tar Heels had a four-possession lead. The Blue Devils tried to catch up as a Thomas Sirk touchdown run led to a 38-20 deficit but Williams had another touchdown run to seal the game on the next possession.
Marquise Williamswent 18-27 with 276 passing yards plus 98 rushing yards for the game. The Tar Heels had 316 rushing yards with T.J. Logan having 116 rushing yards and Romar Morris getting 96. Their rushing total was close to the 378 total yards of offense that Duke had for the entire contest.
Overall, the Blue Devils are 8-3 and still hold the third-best overall record in the ACC in spite of losing their second straight game. North Carolina is now 6-5 and has become the nine team out of fourteen in the ACC to become eligible for a bowl game while heading into another rivalry game next weekend against North Carolina State.
This all came in spite of Duke being -6 favorites. The offense was also strong but it just barely fell under the 66.5 point total that was projected.
