Bet on NCAAFWith so many college football games on tap for Friday and the weekend, we can't cover every one in depth. But read on for some thoughts on games that you should take a second look at and consider placing some money on for NCAA's opening weekend.
On Saturday, the No. 11 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers welcome the Thundering Herd from Marshall. The Mountaineers are favored by 25 ½ points, with a total of 68. West Virginia is returning 7 of its offensive starters from last season, including QB Smith. Marshall is returning 8 of its own from offense, including QB Cato, and improving by the season. This is not a matchup the Mountaineers should take lightly. When the two teams met in 2010, WV needed a stunning comeback with 2 touchdowns in the final 5:15 to pull out the overtime victory 24-21. The spread may be difficult for WV to cover in this one.
Also on Saturday, Northwestern and Syracuse face off in game you can view on ESPN2 at 12:00 ET. The oddsmakers are calling this one a pick'em, with an over/under of 53 ½ points. The Wildcats are only returning 5 players from each of their offensive and defensive starters of the 2011 season, including their starting QB. On the other hand, the Orange have been struggling as of late, going 0-5 both SU and ATS. The last time these two met in 2009, Syracuse came out on top 37-34, when the Cats were favored by 3 points. Give the Orange the very smallest edge on this one, though, as they're playing at home.
Finally, the Iowa Hawkeyes pay a visit to the Northern Illinois Huskies for a game on Saturday. With a start time of 3:30 ET, you can watch the game on ESPNU. The current line favors Iowa by 10, with an over/under of 50 points. The Huskies are rolling with a 9-game win streak, but are only returning 4 of their offensive starters on an offense that was ranked 11th in the nation last year. An especially difficult loss is their brilliant QB Harnish. Northern Illinois is 7-8 ATS lately, and 21-4 SU. However, they are a mere 3-35 SU against Big 10 opponents. Iowa is 2-5 ATS and 2-8 ATS on the road. They have gone 4-1 ATS over the Huskies and are 7-0 ATS in game ones. Pick: Iowa to cover.
