NCAA football betting is never to form and the 2008 season once again reminded college football betting fans to think outside the box. The Georgia Bulldogs were the NCAA football betting favorite to win the BCS title at the start of the 2008 college football betting season as the Bulldogs closed 2007 strong and had a very experienced team.
Georgia was quickly exposed, however, as a NCAA football betting fraud when it came to being a top tier team as they were crushed by Alabama and Florida and then even suffered a college football betting upset loss to arch rival Georgia Tech to close the season.
This was a great NCAA football betting lesson in how you can’t put too much stock on how a team finishes the previous year. The Missouri Tigers were another team that was high on the NCAA odds board to win the BCS title. Mizzou was coming off their best win total ever, (12), in 2007 and was the Big 12 north division champion.
Yet the Tigers also demonstrated a warning to NCAA football betting fans in 2007 that they couldn’t hang with the "Big Boys" as they were twice smoked by Oklahoma. In 2008 Mizzou again was exposed by the upper echelon teams against the NCAA odds.
The BYU Cougars were considered the best NCAA football betting choice from the non BCS leagues to make it to the BCS. BYU had a strong 2007 but proved to be a terrible NCAA football betting value in 2008 as they went 3-9 against the spread despite going 10-3 straight up.
Arizona State was a hot NCAA football betting commodity after head coach Dennis Erickson’s first season in 2007 and this cost them considerable NCAA football betting value in 2008 as the surprise element was gone and they went 4-7 against the spread.
The main NCAA football betting lesson that these beaten favorites teach us is that we have to remain flexible when evaluating the line as well as realize that pre season favorites carry a target on the field and a high price on the board.
