Bet on NCAABXavier is one of those teams that keep winning games, despite having poor performances in a number of areas. Somehow, they find a way to get it done, and they have the winning record to prove it, but they are not playing solid basketball in many of their wins. They will have an opportunity to improve the fundamentals playing La Salle on Tuesday night, however.
The Xavier Musketeers are currently ranked 25th, with a record of 20-6, 11-1, and have won twelve of their last thirteen games. On Saturday, they beat Fordham 79-72, despite being out-rebounded 38-32. They were also outscored in second-chance points 14-7. This game may have been one of the closest calls for Fordham, which has not won a game in the league in the last two years.
Despite their win, the lackluster performance cost Xavier on spot in the polls, falling from 24th to 25th. As they take on La Salle this week, the Musketeers will be looking to improve their overall performance, rather than squeaking out a win in spite of poor stats, poor shooting, and poor rebounding. And La Salle should give them a good opportunity.
Xavier has won their last four meetings with La Salle by an average of 12.5 points, so there might not be much of a challege. Jerrell Williams of La Salle averages 14.0 points per game, but only 9.0 in the last three games against Xavier. He scored 27 in a close loss to George Washington on Saturday, however, so he will be worth watching this Tuesday.
This was La Salle's second straight loss, and they have let go of four of their last five games. They were down by 18 points in the second half and came back to close to within one point of George Washington with :26 left on the clock, but just could not get the job done and pull out a win. La Salle has not beaten a Top 25 team since their March 3, 2001, win against No. 18 Saint Joseph.
