Bet on the NBAOn Wednesday night, newly-minted Knick Carmelo Anthony is expected to take to the floor for his first game playing for the New York team. The Knicks will take on the Milwaukee Bucks at Madison Square Garden and Anthony, a native of New York, will surely be excited to be playing as a hometown favorite so soon after the trade.
Anthony, one of the top picks in the 2003 NBA Draft, was finally traded from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks on Tuesday. The deal brought in the Minnesota Timberwolves to help the Knicks free up salary cap space. New York also acquired two new guards, Chauncey Billups and Anthony Carter, as well as three forwards, Renaldo Balkman, Corey Brewer, and Shelden Williams.
It is the addition of Anthony and Billups, himself a former MVP of the NBA Finals and All-Star, that gives the Knicks a huge leg up in the league and an advantage at the sportsbook. New York is fighting to keep its sixth place spot in the Eastern Conference, as well as looking forward to its first showing in the NBA playoffs since 2004. Adding Anthony, Billups, and Amare Stoudemire gives the Knicks a stronger trio to compete with the lineups from Boston and Miami.
The Bucks, on the other hand, are not playing as well this season, going 22-34 so far. Despite having won the last four games against New York, the Bucks may just not be strong enough, if the Knicks trio is able to play well together. But can Anthony and Billups fit into the New York team seamlessly after only a couple of days? If not, then Milwaukee may have a surprise in store for the Knicks on their home court.
Milwaukee went into the All-Star break having lost eight of their last ten games, but came out of All-Star weekend beating the Timberwolves in Minnesota 94-88. Also, the Bucks dismantled the Knicks in their previous meeting November 9 in Milwaukee, outscoring New York 107-80. This was the Knicks' lowest scoring game of the season so far.
