Bet on HorsesSince 1978, when Affirmed did it and the legendary Seattle Slew the year before, eleven other entries have tried and failed to capture the triple crown. After Affirmed accomplished the feat, back to back with "Slew", people were beginning to think maybe this triple crown thing was'nt so difficult after all.
But they must now think again, thirty four years later as I'll Have Another makes his bid to become part of horse racing history. This years spectacle will be run on Saturday, June 9th in the Big Apple. Race number eleven in your program has a post time of 6:40ET and you may see history unfold, as the NBC television network will telecast it nationally.
Although it may be hard to tell, there are other other horses besides I'll Have Another running in this prestigious affair who hope to thwart his triple crown bid. Somewhat surprisingly, thus far it appears only three horses who competed against I'll Have Another in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness will challenge him in the Belmont. Based on their showings in the first two, it does not seem to be much of a challenge however.
Dullahan is the only one of the three to have done anything prior, with a third place finish at the Derby. Optimizer finished 11th and 6th respectively in the two previous affairs and Union Rags was good for only seventh at Louisville. Other also rans would appear to be Unstoppable You, Skyring, Ravelo's Boy, Guyana Star Dweej, Five Sixteen and Atigun.
So you say, should I just lay some serious coin on I'll Have Another and wait to collect my winnings? Not so fast. Besides the tradition of upsets here, there are a couple of capable contenders. Street Life and Paynter are more than capable of giving the Derby and Preakness winner a literal run for his money.
Paynter is trained by Bob Baffert who as trainer for Bodemeister certainly caught everyones attention in the first two legs of this series. Street Life is a late finisher, perfect for those aforementioned upsets previously seen in this race. Union Rags could also surprise.
The official morning lines odds will not be set until post positions are drawn on June 6th, but a peek at an unofficial "futures" lineup for the top three entries might look something like this:
