Bet on the MLBThe Washington Nationals and New York Mets have both been competing to win the NL East in recent time. The Nationals were originally seen as big favorites to win but the tides have turned substantially as the two sides have become very close.
As of mid-August, the Mets have a 63-54 record while the Nationals have fallen to 58-58. The leads the Mets to being a -250 favorite to win the division while the Nationals are back at +170 odds from our sportsbook.
What Makes the Mets Strong
The New York Mets have become stronger in recent time because the team has maintained one of the best pitching staffs in the game. The team has a 3.18 ERA, the second-lowest total in the sport. The team has an opposing batting average of .238 as well, a total that is the third-lowest in the game.
Jacob deGrom has become a surprise Cy Young candidate this season. He has a 2.03 ERA and 152 strikeouts while getting an 11-6 record.
The acquisition of Max Scherzer this offseason was supposed to make the Nationals a big World Series favorite. Scherzer has indeed been proficient this year with a 2.73 ERA, 194 strikeouts and only 23 walks in a season where he had a no-hitter that almost became a perfect game. However, much of the team’s pitching staff has struggled between Gio Gonzalez and Doug Fister’s control issues and ongoing injury concerns for Stephen Strasburg.
Bryce Harper could be a real NL MVP candidate this year based on his statistics. He has a .332 batting average and 30 home runs this year. Other batters, particularly Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman, have either dealt with real concerns over consistency and occasional injury problems.
The two teams have twelve games left between one another with those games being divided evenly between Nationals Park and Citi Field. The possibility for the Mets to win the NL East is very evident. The race for the division is especially crucial as Pittsburgh, the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco are clearly the favorites for the wild card spots.
