Bet on the MLBThe Boston Red Sox have gotten off to one of their most dismal starts in 66 years.
Today, the Sox take on the New York Yankees at Fenway Park in one of their most heated rivalries. Will the Boston baseball team finally get their first win of the year against the hated Yankees, or will they continue sliding into the 2011 season?
Boston's games this year have been a disappointment, to say the least. The Sox were crushed by the defending AL champs the Texas Rangers in three games. They were just as bad against the Cleveland Indians, losing another three games. With a 0-6 record so far this year, it is the worst start to a Boston baseball season since 1945 when they went 0-8.
The problem for the Red Sox so far is abysmal hitting. They are only .181 so far teamwise, and they have only 11 scores all year. Pitching is also causing the team problems, as they are giving up a league-worst 7.13 ERA. The team was supposed to be stocked with All Stars, and preseason expectations were unimaginably high for the Red Sox. But the team has just not found a rhythm yet, and their terrible hitting is a symptom of their lack of balance.
The Yankees, on the other hand, are off to a respectable 4-2 start. New York has been showcasing some of the strongest pitching performances of the 2011 season so far. But all of their six games have been played at home, whereas Boston has begun their season on the road. The big question is whether the Red Sox will play as badly at home as away, and whether the Yankees falter away from home.
While the Sox should be able to beat the Yankees this weekend in the three-game series at least twice, the Boston team really needs to turn around their hitting and pitching games. They were expected to go to the World Series, but now they are just hoping to get back above .500 sometime soon. Boston is the 1.5 run favorites today, with the total set at 10.
